The Shocking Truth About Truck Rollovers

In my last blog I ended with the thought that I would look at crowd funding for university research. This blog is about that, but you have got to get though the following idea to get to that idea.

As you may have gathered from my prior blogs, I have taken an interest in all things related to the wheel end, including tires and wheels and because of this blog, I recently got involved with a company that wants me to use my skills to get the word out about a facet of wheel end maintenance that many ignore or totally misunderstand.... More On Snake Oil

After several discussions about my previous blog entitled “How to Sell Snake Oil and Mouse Milk to Unsuspecting Trucking Companies”, I felt a follow-up blog was in order.

Niche Celebrity Or Trusted Resource?

I don’t remember exactly where I read this, but I came across the term, “niche celebrity” in an article about social media. The idea of the article was, through social media, bloggers, like here on Big Truck TV, are on their way to becoming trucking celebrities.

The first trucking industry celebrity, if I had to name one, would be Jim Hebe of International and Freightliner fame. What is funny, not only did I study karate with Chuck Norris, but I sold Jim Hebe on being a pioneer on rebuilding fan clutches in his dealership back in the 1980’s - so I know a little about celebrities.... It’s Not That Easy Being Green*

Recently I helped sell a top-of-the-line truck seat to an owner operator. Our green program offers a monetary trade-in allowance on any truck seat. The owner operator did not take advantage of the trade-in program. As part of our customer satisfaction follow-up, I inquired as to what happened to the old seat. A green use would have been to refurbish it and reuse it in another truck. At a minimum, it could be stripped of all usable parts and the leftovers properly recycled.... Read More

How to Sell Snake Oil and Mouse Milk to Unsuspecting Trucking Companies

We all Pay for Road Gators

Hit the link below to check out this sad story. I would like to see a study that would put cameras on tire service trucks to see what debris could be dealt with using a Gator-Getter (http://www.gatorind.com/) installed on the front of a service truck. If the debris is gone from the travel lane by the time a tire service arrives, then the idea won't work, but what if the gator is still there? If you would be interested in sponsoring the R&D please email me at bob@bobrutherford.com.... Read More

A Business Act of Piracy as Defined by Bob Rutherford

Wired magazine has a special section in their March issue related to all kinds of piracy. What caught my eye was a quote attributed to Steve Jobs, “Why join the Navy when you can be a pirate?” I Googled the quote and found lots of speculation as to what he meant.

In my career in the trucking industry, on more than one occasion, I felt like I was doing what real pirates would be doing if they were in business today. So here is my pirate story.... Read More

How do You Respect Someone Who Thinks an Elephant Looks like a Rope?

My first blog here was titled “Connecting the Dots”. Here are three dots I just had to write about. Fellow blogger Rickey Gooch wrote a blog entitled “When Truckers Cry”. The Editor-in-Chief of HDT wrote a first class editorial “Respect Pays” at the same time my oldest granddaughter was picked as one of the final three winners in a school contest to write a sentence and draw a picture about RESPECT. She has since won that competition. Please click on these links to see the referenced items if you want to:... Read More

Training and More Training, Then Just a Tad More...

Recently there have been reports that tire techs have been flooding tires with too much water-based lube when mounting tires. This excess amount of lube starts corrosion in the tire/rim assembly and will interfere with the performance of ALL internal balancing media including the Counteract Balancing Beads that I have been associated with since that product was tested at Auburn University. What happened to the concept of ONLY clean dry air going into the tire?... Read More

"The Jokers"

I have to agree with Tom Kretsinger that being asked to share my life on Big Truck TV as a blogger has made the future for me not what it used to be. I just got back from the Mid-America Truck Show where I was asked if I was THE Bob Rutherford on Big Truck. I was also asked by an exhibitor what it would take for me to blog about their company and products. Off the top of my head I said I guess you have got to become part of my life. To backup what Tom said, “I often have people I don’t know come up to me at industry events to talk about something I posted. Talk about networking!... Read More
